3 Myths About Self-compassion

  •  Self-compassion is selfish.

  • Self-compassion is self-indulgent.

  • Self-compassion stops motivation.

So, there are the myths, now here’s the truth.

The truth is - there is nothing selfish or self-indulgent about self-compassion and I believe it can only aid self-motivation.

Self-compassion is when you take some of that kindness and understanding that you show to everyone around you, and you take some of it and give it to yourself instead of all that criticism and harsh words you usually save up for you.

Because the thing is, those things you’re saying about or to yourself, you probably wouldn’t dream of saying about another person or to them, would you?

And once we become more comfortable with being kinder to ourselves this idea of having to be the best, and having to succeed gradually becomes less and we can start to focus on just being and enjoying ourselves. So, self-compassion can help to reduce the fear of failure as it allows us to make mistakes and not absolutely beat ourselves up for it afterwards.

So, to reiterate, there is NOTHING selfish or self-indulgent about creating time for you. Having time for a breather, for reflection, a moment to understand why you’re feeling the way you are can only help you to motivate yourself because when we feel rested, we feel ready to do what we need to do, and we can’t do it all when we’re burnt out.
